For the first time since Rep. Josh Gottheimer took office in January, the House agreed on Friday to add language he wrote to a bill, which later passed unanimously.
Gottheimer, D-Wyckoff, appeared on the House floor to offer an amendment to a bill designed to streamline hiring practices at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The amendment, which would add younger veterans to a group who would get special consideration for posts, was adopted in a voice vote.

Gottheimer said young veterans – defined in the amendment as recipients of the post-9/11 GI Bill and those under 30 who have recently graduated from college – face significant challenges when they return home, even though many of them have a desire to help serve other veterans.
"We can do more to improve the process and give a leg up to all veterans who wish to bring their skills to the VA," he said.
