Gateway Program "Most Vital Piece of Infrastructure" Needed in U.S.

Today, as New Jersey commuters experience delayed commutes during the so-called “Summer of Hell,” Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) toured the future site of the Gateway Project — called the “most vital piece of infrastructure that needs to be built in the U.S.,” by the U.S. Department of Transportation — which will modernize and increase capacity for commuters and travelers between New Jersey and New York.

Descending deep below ground underneath the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan’s West Side, Amtrak officials showed Gottheimer the concrete casing of the Hudson Yards Right-Of-Way Preservation Project. This concrete casing preserves the right-of-way for the future Hudson Tunnel that will be built as part of the Gateway Project.

“I’m so frustrated with New Jersey’s ‘Summer of Hell’ that I went to the Hudson Tunnel project myself to see what we can do to fix the rails and get our people—and economy—moving. We have spent decades kicking the can down the road when it comes to our roads and rail, and now we are stuck cleaning up the crumbling pieces. It’s crushing our economy, our commutes, our productivity, and our time with our families; it’s inexcusable. I will continue to fight on a bipartisan basis to move forward Gateway and other top-priority infrastructure projects across the country,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer.
