NJ-5 towns in Sussex: $277 million — in Warren: $216 million — in Bergen: $2.38 billion — in Passaic: $122 million

On July 28, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) announced that $3 billion in federal investment from the bipartisan CARES Act has helped the Fifth District’s counties and towns to date, based on the most recent public data.

Gottheimer announced that, of the communities within the Fifth District, Sussex County has received an estimated $277 million with 1,286 cases in the entire county, Warren County has received an estimated $216 million with 1,321 cases in the entire county, Bergen County has received an estimated $2.38 billion with 20,341 cases in the entire county, and Passaic County has received an estimated $122 million with 17,348 cases in the entire county.

“From early on, North Jersey was in the eye of the COVID-19 storm — with both a health crisis and an economic crisis. The CARES Act was one Congress’s major economic relief bills that was signed into law in March. Through our calculations, based on the latest data we have, and averages coming to Jersey residents, we are estimating that New Jersey’s Fifth District alone has received $3 billion to date from the CARES Act — averaging out to $4,021 per Fifth District resident,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) today. “The CARES Act has benefited families in every single town — all 79 in my district — and it’s benefited every single county in my district — hundreds of millions of dollars to each — heading to Sussex, Warren, Passaic, and Bergen Counties.”

Gottheimer continued, “North Jersey is continuing to face major battles — both the fight to make sure every resident is protected from this virus and the fight to get our local economies, businesses, and communities back on track. We’ve seen what’s needed for us to survive and recover — the CARES Act investment I’ve announced today, to date, is helping — but I’m making sure we’re fighting to claw more resources back for our communities. This will all help ensure our best days are ahead of us.”

These estimate calculations combine the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to the small businesses in each individual county, the direct Economic Impact Payments to residents in each individual county, the federal unemployment support, and the direct federal grants going to each individual county to their hospitals, non-profits, food banks, colleges, and technical schools.

Nationwide, the CARES Act also included $16 billion for the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), $100 billion for the Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund to help purchase PPE, and $250 million for the Hospital Preparedness Program to help purchase PPE, among other investments for PPE and resources.
