Gottheimer Helps Score Win for Jersey Businesses and Jobs
Successfully Blocks New Tariffs on Fifth District Manufacturers
Today, June 15, 2018, Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) celebrated the win for Jersey businesses and jobs, after the U.S. Trade Representative heeded Gottheimer’s call and removed New Jersey company Snow Joe’s products from the list of companies affected by its new 25 percent tariffs.
On Tuesday, June 12, Gottheimer visited Snow Joe’s new distribution facility in Mahwah, set to open in July and bring 150 new jobs to the area within its first year, to kick off his #MadeInTheFifth tour and stand up against the proposed sweeping tariffs against New Jersey jobs and businesses.
“After calling on the U.S. Trade Representative to exclude Snow Joe’s innovative snow blowers and electric snow shovels from the proposed tariffs this past Tuesday, I was thrilled to see these products removed from the list of tariffs announced this morning. As far as we know, these particular products aren’t even made domestically and would have decimated 25 percent of Snow Joe’s business,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “But the work’s not done yet. Many great New Jersey and American companies continue to face the serious threat of sweeping tariffs on their goods. We must stand up to China’s intellectual property theft and do everything we can to make and buy goods here in the U.S., but we need a targeted and strategic approach. I’m continuing to fight for a more comprehensive approach to dealing with China’s strategic theft of our intellectual property, including advancing Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) reforms to protect our national security and jobs.”
“Rep. Josh Gottheimer stood up for Snow Joe when we needed his help the most. We welcomed him this week to our new 271,000-foot Distribution Center in Mahwah NJ, and he pledged to help us avoid what would have been damaging tariffs for our business. Now thanks to Rep. Gottheimer’s help Snow Joe can return to our mission of growing, creating good New Jersey jobs, and providing affordable household tools for American consumers,” said Joseph Cohen, CEO and Founder of Snow Joe + Sun Joe.
