Today, Friday, February 7, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) hosted a bipartisan group of mayors from across New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District, to meet with federal agencies about clawing back more of our federal tax dollars back to North Jersey communities for infrastructure projects impacting the region, to support local law enforcement and first responders, to keep our air and water clean, and to lower taxes for North Jersey residents.

“I want to thank all the North Jersey mayors and officials who came down to Washington today to discuss how we can get a better return on investment from our federal tax dollars by connecting directly with federal agencies, learning best practices and opportunities for federal grant investment, and sharing best practices amongst our communities so we can serve our constituents better,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5).

To help lower taxes in North Jersey, Gottheimer works with mayors, councils, first responders, and nonprofits to apply for federal grant opportunities to claw back more of our federal tax dollars. Through these initiatives, the Fifth District has realized a far better Return on Investment on the tax dollars North Jersey residents send to Washington each year. In 2019, Gottheimer announced that, since 2016, the Fifth District has clawed back 57% more federal tax dollars from Washington.

The Fifth District has historically received 33 cents in federal investment for every federal tax dollar we pay to Washington, while Moocher States like Mississippi get $4.38 for every one dollar.

Today’s Fifth District Mayors Summit included sessions with the U.S. General Services Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Library of Congress.

Attendees included Belvidere Mayor Joe Kennedy, Belvidere Council President Kathleen Miers, Hardwick Mayor Kevin Duffy, Hope Mayor Tim McDonough, Emerson Mayor Danielle DiPaola, Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio, Bergenfield Business Administrator Corey Gallo, Frankford Deputy Mayor James Ayers, Fredon Mayor John Flora, Vernon Mayor Howard Burrell, and Knowlton Mayor Adele Starrs.
