Today in response to the United States Declaring Jerusalem the Capital of Israel, Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement:

“I have long believed that the United States must recognize that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, our vital ally, the leading democracy in the Middle East, and the nation-state of the Jewish people. Current law, signed by President Clinton in 1995, maintains that the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in its capital, Jerusalem. I strongly support making that happen, as soon as possible, and in the right way to protect our security and Israel’s. Recognizing this reality should not prejudice the outcome of a negotiated peace agreement that can only be achieved through direct talks between the two parties.”
