Gottheimer Statement on Israel-UAE Agreement
Today, August 14, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement:
“The recent announcement of the normalization of relations between the Emirates and Israel is a promising development towards peace and stability in the Middle East.
For many decades, Israel has been unfairly singled out on the world’s stage and stigmatized by too many who have refused to accept the existence and legitimacy of the Jewish state. Today, however, the leading democracy in the Middle East is increasingly recognized as a regional powerhouse, and a critical partner in the fight against terrorism and other adversaries. Upgraded ties between Israel and the Emirates will undoubtedly benefit both countries’ citizens, expand economic development, and improve regional integration.
This historic agreement, in which Israel has chosen to refrain from annexation and in turn will seek to strengthen ties with other Muslim and Arab countries, also presents an opportunity for the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table. Peace will not come from rejectionism and denial, but from increasing acceptance, coexistence, and cooperation with Israel. To that end, the United States must continue its strong, bipartisan support for our ally Israel’s security, and play a leading role in bringing together both sides for peace.
I look forward to the full implementation of this agreement, and to further steps which advance cooperation and peace between our ally Israel, the Palestinians, and other neighbors in the Middle East.”
