Gottheimer Statement on Route 80 Sinkholes
NORTH JERSEY — Today, March 27, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement regarding sinkholes on Route 80 in North Jersey:
“I’m closely monitoring the sinkhole issues along Route 80, and I’m in communication with the NJ Department of Transportation to ensure the state is doing everything possible to address the problem. This crisis is severely impacting Jersey families in Northern New Jersey, small businesses, and commuters who rely on this critical highway every day to get to work, support our local economy, and see friends and family.
I’ve heard from so many Jersey families and small business owners who have been affected by the road closures and delays. The state must work quickly and properly to repair the damage and restore normal traffic flow as soon as possible.
I fully support Governor Murphy’s State of Emergency declaration, and I’m also urging the Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy to step in with the necessary federal resources and funding to help repair the damage. I will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure that Jersey gets the support we need and that Route 80 is reopened as quickly as humanly possible.”
