Provision ensures National Guard responding to COVID-19 receive at least 14 days of housing to quarantine safely before returning home

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, the House passed bipartisan legislation that included U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s (NJ-5) provision to provide quarantine protections for National Guard members working on the front lines of COVID-19. 

The legislation ensures members of the National Guard responding to the COVID-19 pandemic are provided with at least 14 days of housing to quarantine safely before returning to their families and communities.

“As we work through this pandemic, we must continue to support all the brave members of our National Guard as they sacrifice so much to help keep our communities safe and healthy,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) “My legislation looks out for brave National Guard members on the front lines of COVID-19, including at disaster-stricken long-term care facilities like the state-run New Jersey Veterans Home at Paramus, by providing two weeks of housing to quarantine safely before returning to their families and communities. With the House passing my provision today, we are getting the backs of those who have bravely had ours over these past months. With all that these brave servicemembers have given our communities, the last thing they should have to worry about is a place to quarantine safely without putting their families and communities at risk”

In recent months, National Guard members have been dispatched throughout New Jersey to assist long-term care facilities and to help contain the spread of the coronavirus.

In April, Gottheimer led multiple efforts requesting that the National Guard and Reserves be deployed to assist the more than 45 long-term care facilities in the Fifth District, including the state-run Veterans Home at Paramus and the Subacute facilities in Andover.
