MONTVALE, NJ — On April 26, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) commemorated the Armenian Genocide with the Armenian National Committee of New Jersey.
“We are gathered here to remember the day in 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were rounded up and ultimately murdered at the start of the Armenian Genocide,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), a member of the bipartisan Congressional Armenian Caucus. “It is our solemn responsibility to honestly recognize and repeatedly call out historic facts, including the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians, more than 750,000 Greeks, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs, Arameans, Maronites, and other Christians. As we continue to see a rise in acts of hate and targeted violence against ethnic and religious minorities around the world, it is vital that we not conceal or be bystanders to evil. Only by standing together and raising our voices about genocide can we pursue justice and eradicate hate.”
Gottheimer continued, “By recognizing the Armenian Genocide, we pay tribute to the perseverance of the survivors and honor the dedication and contributions of Armenian-Americans who do so much to strengthen our communities and our nation. I will unequivocally speak the truth about the Armenian genocide and stand with our ally Armenia in the face of violence.”
As a proud member of the bipartisan Congressional Armenian Caucus:
- Gottheimer helped lead the historic passage of House Resolution 296, which affirms the United States’ recognition of the Armenian genocide.
- Gottheimer helped introduce the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Act, which would direct the Librarian of Congress to carry out activities to support Armenian Genocide education programs and awareness.
- Gottheimer helped introduce the Azerbaijan Sanctions Review Act, which would require the President to review whether Magnitsky sanctions are applicable to high-level Azerbaijani officials who carried out the ethnic cleansing of Armenians from Artsakh last year.
Gottheimer was joined by Senator Holly Schipisi (LD 39), Bergen County Commissioners Tracy Zurr and Tom Sullivan, Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali, and Hillsdale Mayor Michael Sheinfeld, Jero Mouradian of the Armenian National Committee of New Jersey, and Reverend Father Vache Balekjian.
