PRINCETON, NJ — Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) visited the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) to tour several of the lab’s cutting-edge fusion energy and quantum technology facilities and discuss the future of American energy innovation, scientific research, and advanced manufacturing.

During the visit, Gottheimer met with PPPL Director Sir Steven Cowley, Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber, and other laboratory and university leaders to learn more about the lab’s groundbreaking work in fusion power, plasma science, and quantum technologies.

“New Jersey continues to lead the nation in innovation, research, and energy technology,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “The groundbreaking work happening at PPPL has the potential to revolutionize how we power our future, strengthen our energy independence, lower costs, and create good-paying jobs here at home. I’ll continue fighting to ensure New Jersey remains at the forefront of fusion energy and scientific innovation.”

The tour included visits to the National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U), PPPL’s flagship fusion experiment, which heats plasma to temperatures seven times hotter than the sun and is helping pave the way toward scalable fusion energy. Gottheimer also toured the Fusion Research and Technology Hub (FuRTH), the Facility for Laboratory Reconnection Experiments (FLARE), the Princeton Plasma Innovation Center (PPIC), and the Quantum Diamond Laboratory (QDL), where researchers are developing advanced materials for next-generation quantum computing applications.

Gottheimer has consistently supported federal resources for fusion energy research and PPPL’s work through the appropriations process, including backing efforts to secure the fully authorized amount for fusion energy activities in this year’s federal appropriations bills.

PPPL, a Department of Energy national laboratory managed by Princeton University, conducts research focused on fusion energy, plasma science, and advanced technologies that support American competitiveness and energy security.
