Proposed Federal Budget is Disaster for Jersey’s Seniors, Health Care, Infrastructure, Water, and Air
Massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare
Today, Monday, February 10, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer sounded the alarm on the negative impacts a new federal government budget proposal would have on North Jersey’s seniors, families’ health care, infrastructure, and our clean air and water.
This federal budget proposal seeks to massively cut critical federal investments:
- Cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid: This proposed budget guts Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, harming North Jersey nursing home residents and children with special health care needs. These cuts threaten those seeking opioid addiction treatment, seniors with long-term care needs, and families and children across North Jersey.
- Gutting Investments in Infrastructure: Rather than investing in fixing our crumbling roads and bridges, this federal budget proposal cuts away at key investments that could come from the U.S. Department of Transportation, severely hampering efforts to reduce commute times and improve North Jersey’s infrastructure.
- Putting Our Clean Air and Water at Risk: This budget proposal slashes investment for initiatives to keep our air and water clean by more than 25 percent.
“When I wake up every day, I know that it’s my responsibility to fight for my constituents by working to lower our health care costs, protect Social Security and Medicare, fix our crumbling infrastructure, cut taxes, stand by our first responders and veterans, and help keep our water and air clean for our children and their children. This federal budget proposal is devastating to all of these efforts,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “We need our leaders, both Democratic and Republican, to put politics aside and find solutions that put the nation first.”
