RELEASE: Gottheimer Announces Legislation to Combat Anti-Sikh Discrimination, Protect Sikh Community in New Jersey
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, May 31, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) announced new legislation to help protect members of the Sikh community in New Jersey and across the country from discrimination and hate.
Gottheimer’s legislation will create a dedicated task force within the Department of Justice (DOJ) focused on combating anti-Sikh discrimination, including developing a federal definition of anti-Sikhism.
“No one in Jersey or our great country should live in fear because of their faith,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “The Sikh community has been a vital part of our great, diverse Jersey and American community for generations. Yet, they continue to face hate and discrimination. My legislation will help ensure the federal government is able to combat anti-Sikh bigotry head-on. We must stand united against hate in all its forms. It has no place in our state or country.”
Gottheimer has long promoted religious freedom and tolerance, and continues to work closely with faith communities across the Fifth District. In 2023, Gottheimer helped secure $150,000 in Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) funding for the Sikh Gurudwara of Glen Rock for physical security enhancements to help prevent and keep communities safe from terrorist attacks and other domestic threats.
