WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) highlighted New York’s decision to indefinitely pause the implementation of the Congestion Tax ahead of its planned June 30 start date. After a five year fight, this decision will protect families and children from cancer-causing pollution and save hardworking Jersey families, commuters, and small business owners thousands of dollars every year.

Video of the conference can be found here.

Gottheimer’s full statement can be found here.

“Today, Jersey families, their wallets, and the environment won big. As I always say, don’t mess with Jersey,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “Five years ago, I said that we would fight for Jersey families until the very end, and that’s exactly what we did. We threw the kitchen sink at New York — and then some — and got it done. Even when some said the fight was over, we kept going. Well today, Jersey families, their wallets, and the environment won big.”

Gottheimer has fought the Congestion Tax for five years — through bipartisan bills, freedom of information requests, letters, and countless press conferences. Today’s decision by the Governor is a major victory for New Jersey families, commuters, and small businesses. It will allow New Jersey and New York to continue their cooperative relationship at the Port Authority and pass billions of dollars worth of commerce through the region.
