WASHINGTON, DC — Today, December 21, 2024, the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act, which Gottheimer cosponsored in the US House of Representatives, heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The legislation will repeal provisions in the Social Security Act that unfairly reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for three million Americans — including police officers, firefighters, teachers, postal workers, and other public servants who have dedicated their careers to serving their communities.

Gottheimer also signed the discharge petition to trigger a vote on the legislation that was proudly endorsed by the Problem Solvers Caucus in May, which helped ensure its passage in the House.

The House of Representatives approved the bill by a 327-75 vote.

The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 76-20.

“I’m proud to have supported the bipartisan, bicameral Social Security Fairness Act to ensure that public servants and their families receive full Social Security benefits. Those who devote their careers to service — teachers, firefighters, law enforcement, postal workers, and more — should never struggle to access their pension and Social Security benefits at retirement,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05). “I am extremely glad that the members of the Problem Solvers Caucus came together to endorse this commonsense legislation and help it get over the finish line in the House.”
