ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Today, Monday, November 3, 2025, as the federal government shutdown threatens vital SNAP and WIC support, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) joined with the Center for Food Action (CFA) and Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur to distribute food to local families. With SNAP food assistance benefits lapsed and WIC set to run out at the end of November, this on-the-ground effort aims to ensure no family goes hungry.
Gottheimer recently announced new action to end the government shutdown, protect SNAP food assistance, extend the ACA tax credits, and protect Jersey families from skyrocketing costs.
SNAP benefits cover more than 800,000 people in New Jersey and nearly 42 million nationwide, with families on average receiving nearly $200 a month — a lifeline for families.
“As families have lost access to their November SNAP benefits, the food assistance they rely on to feed themselves every day literally disappeared. Families shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table or paying for medication. We must reopen the government in a bipartisan way, extend the ACA tax credits, and fund critical programs like SNAP so that hundreds of thousands of people do not go hungry,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “We can’t just let families get whacked by thousands of dollars in premium increases. We can’t let them lose access to SNAP. We have an opportunity to work together to prevent a financial disaster from wrecking Jersey pocketbooks — to stop families from going hungry. We must get this done. And, I’m not going to stop fighting until we do.”
Gottheimer was joined today at CFA by Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur, who formed the original Bergen County Food Security Task Force that became the Bergen County Office of Food Security.
