HACKENSACK, NJ — Today, June 2, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Bergen County Commissioner Germaine Ortiz hosted a round table with the North Jersey Latino community to discuss his fight to protect critical programs that seniors rely on — including Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare.
“In Jersey, it’s part of our Jersey Values to defend our seniors and the most vulnerable. Yet, the Trump Administration has announced they are turning their backs on our seniors with reckless budget cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid — critical lifelines our families rely on,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “We must stop this disastrous assault on our seniors, and that’s exactly what I am fighting to do in Congress. This won’t be easy, but I won’t back down from a fight.”
In Congress, Gottheimer is fighting to protect seniors and the critical programs they depend on:
- Gottheimer helped introduce new legislation, the Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act, to suspend the closure of all Social Security offices.
- The legislation requires a detailed report to Congress before the Administration can shut down these critical facilities.
- As the far-right budget bill that passed the House of Representatives heads to the Senate, Gottheimer sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune to sound the alarm on the devastating damage that these cuts will inflict on Jersey families.
- Gottheimer introduced the Guarding Unprotected Aging Retirees from Deception (GUARD) Act and the Senior Security Act to help combat financial fraud and “pig butchering” scams targeting older Americans.
