WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) joined with the American Sikh Caucus Committee to honor this month’s Vaisakhi celebration — a joyous and significant festival for millions of Sikhs around the world. In Sikhism, Vaisakhi recognizes the day that the Khalsa was established and publicly entrusted with leadership.
The American Sikh Congressional Caucus is also marking its 10th anniversary this month.
During the American Sikh Caucus Committee’s Vaisakhi celebration, Gottheimer spoke about his work with North Jersey’s Sikh community, clawing resources back to New Jersey to keep houses of worship and community organizations safe, and protecting religious freedom.
“Vaisakhi celebrations have been an integral part of America’s fabric for more than 125 years,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), a member of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus. “This month, as we’ve come together to commemorate this important occasion, let us reflect on the values that the Sikh community embodies — equality, justice, and service to others. We also recognize the contributions of the Sikh community to the United States — in business, technology, education, and the arts, and bravely in our military and public service. Let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting religious freedom and tolerance, and to working toward a world where all people are free to practice their faith without fear or discrimination.”
Gottheimer was joined by New Jersey Gurdwara Council Coordinator Yadvinder Singh, American Sikh Caucus Committee Director Pritpal Singh, UN Global Steering Committee Member Dr. Iqtidar Cheema, former Congressman Pat Meehan (PA), and interfaith representatives.
