RELEASE: Gottheimer Statement on Redesignation of the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization

“Last week, my colleague Brian Mast and I called on the Department of State to redesignate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. I’m pleased that the President is taking this critical step to keep our nation and allies safe. The Houthis have directly targeted American warships and our allies, shot at and captured commercial shipping vessels, and threatened the national and economic security of the United States.

The Houthis’ terrorist attacks have wreaked death and destruction in the past weeks and months. Since October 7, the Houthis have openly declared their unwavering support for Hamas and its barbaric acts against Israelis. Utilizing ballistic missiles, drones, and even hijacking vessels by boarding them from a helicopter, the Houthis are actively attacking ships they believe are destined for Israel. 

The Houthi flag and slogan declares ‘Death to America, Death to Israel, A Curse Upon the Jews.’

Their reign of terror must end, and this designation is a key step to making that happen.”
