WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, December 9, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) was appointed to be a founding Co-Chair of the new House Commission on Artificial Intelligence and the Innovation Economy.

The new House Commission on Artificial Intelligence and the Innovation Economy will help:

  • Craft the Democratic policy and legislative agenda on AI;
  • Educate the Democratic Caucus on key issues on AI and its impact on American jobs, national security, energy, education, health care, and more;
  • Host regular briefings with key stakeholders from industry, academia, and civil society organizations, promoting AI’s innovative benefits and necessary guardrails.

“From health care to education, the potential for artificial intelligence is boundless. The key for our economy and national security is to stay ahead of the curve — and ahead of our global competitors,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the National Security Agency and Cyber, I see every day just how quickly the landscape is shifting. That’s why this new Commission on AI is critical. We need to ensure Congress is educated on these new technologies, that we’re putting the right policies, legislation, and guardrails in place to grow and protect Americans, and that the U.S. continues to be the leader in AI-fueled jobs and innovation.”

The other House Commission on AI and the Innovation Economy co-chairs appointed alongside Gottheimer were Reps. Ted Lieu (CA-36) and Valerie Foushee (NC-4).

AI is expected to create new opportunities, increase efficiency, and transform the U.S. economy. Over the next ten years, AI is expected to increase global GDP by $7 trillion and increase the U.S. GDP by 1.5% by 2035, nearly 3% by 2055, and 3.7% by 2075. Research shows that productivity will skyrocket and, in many sectors, wages will increase.

At the same time, we must ensure that our children are safe, deep fakes are shut down, and new jobs are created.

We must also protect America’s national security.  China’s flagship AI programs, like DeepSeek, spread propaganda and threaten to steal Americans’ sensitive data. Its industrial base is working to corner the global market for semiconductor manufacturing, both of which represent serious threats to U.S. economic and national security.

Previously, Gottheimer has helped lead key bipartisan AI legislation, including the Unleashing AI Innovation in Financial Services Act, to promote AI innovation in financial services and create Innovation Labs at financial regulatory agencies to test AI projects; the Liquid Cooling for AI Act, to support new technologies, make data centers more efficient, and help bring energy costs down; the Growing University AI Research for Defense (GUARD) Act, to establish an AI Institute at a senior military college; and, the Advanced AI Security Readiness Act, to protect American AI from foreign threats.
