NEWTON, NJ — Today, September 9, 2022, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of Thorlabs’ new building, Quantum Leap. Today’s expansion will create new jobs in Northern New Jersey. Gottheimer was joined by Thorlabs founder Alex Cable, Thorlabs President Jennifer Cable, and Thorlabs employee.

“Thorlabs is an innovative Northern New Jersey business that is continuing to expand their incredible facilities in Newton,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “The ingenuity and creativity taking place at Thorlabs has led to thousands of jobs for New Jersey and is continuing to help to revitalize and invest in Sussex County.”

Founded in 1989, Thorlabs is headquartered in Sussex County and is home to their mechanics, optics, fiber optics, advanced systems technology, and laser division teams as well as one of four primary distribution warehouses. On-site manufacturing takes place at the Newton headquarters and approximately 90% of its products are manufactured in-house. Thorlabs products serve research institutions, manufacturers, and biomedical organizations.

In 2020, Gottheimer joined with Thorlabs, Sussex County Community College (SCCC), and the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program to host a roundtable to discuss ongoing cooperation to close the middle-skill jobs gap in North Jersey, to identify federal investment opportunities to expand STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) training, and to continue the public-private partnerships supporting SCCC’s optics technology programs.
