The House passed two key pieces of legislation authored by U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) this week to protect the United States’ Strategic Petroleum Reserve from foreign adversaries, terrorists, and their cronies.

Gottheimer’s provisions passed this week include the following measures:

  • Stopping Domestic Energy Production on Federal Lands from Benefiting Cronies of Foreign Adversaries: Gottheimer’s provision ensures that any plan to increase oil and gas production on federal lands will not financially benefit companies owned by or contracted with nations like China, Russia, terrorist Iran, North Korea, or countries subject to U.S. sanctions.
  • Banning the Sale of U.S. Petroleum Reserves to Bad Actors: Gottheimer’s provision prohibits the sale of oil from the United States’ Strategic Petroleum Reserve from ending up in the hands of bad actors like China, Russia, terrorist Iran, and North Korea.

“Our own nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve should in no way benefit murderous dictators, oppressive regimes, or the world’s leading state-sponsor of terrorism: Iran,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “We need to utilize our domestic production, use existing resources, and get more barrels domestically and from allied countries like Canada, Mexico, and Colombia in the short-term. This will help us in the long-run, as we continue our aggressive and necessary march toward energy independence.”
