STATEMENT: Gottheimer Urges Bipartisan Action to Extend ACA Tax Credits, Keep Government Open
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Friday, September 19, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement:
“President Trump promised to lower costs — but today’s funding bill fails to protect hardworking families from skyrocketing health care costs.
Here’s the bottom line: if we don’t act now, critical Affordable Care Act tax credits will expire at the end of this year. That means in New Jersey, more than 454,000 people — including 38,000 in my District — will see their GetCoveredNJ premiums skyrocket. Letting these health care tax credits expire will create a new tax on hardworking families, with Fifth District residents set to pay an additional $1,640 a year for premiums — a 61% increase.
Instead of pulling the rug out from under families, we should extend the ACA tax credits as a part of the government funding bill. We should keep the government funded in a responsible, bipartisan way that doesn’t abandon our families. But, right now, the far-right in the House is refusing to negotiate with us to get this done.
These aren’t red issues or blue issues — these are pocketbook issues. These tax credits help tens of thousands of people in the Fifth District, and hundreds of thousands across Jersey, afford their health care. It’s time to put politics aside, work across the aisle, and stand up for the thousands of families who just want affordable health care.”
