On Monday, March 9, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) hosted a coordination conference call with North Jersey hospital officials to discuss coordination efforts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus in New Jersey.

Joining Gottheimer on today’s call included officials from Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, Valley Health System, Atlantic Health System, Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center, and Holy Name Medical Center.

“Right now, there are several presumptive positive cases of coronavirus in New Jersey and we are all working in coordination to contain the outbreak and follow CDC guidelines. I’ve been working closely and in touch with the hospitals and the Governor’s office to address what resources our providers, counties, and state need to contain the outbreak,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5).

The Centers for Disease Control provides the following guidance for Americans who want to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus:

·  Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

·  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

·  Stay home when you are sick.

·  Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

·  Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

·  Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.

o CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including coronavirus.

o Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of the coronavirus to help prevent the spread of the disease to  others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

·  Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

o If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
