RELEASE: Gottheimer, Co-Chair of SALT Caucus, Introduces Amendment to Tax Bill That Would Fully Restore the SALT Deduction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, May 20, 2025, Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), Co-Chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus, helped introduce an amendment to House Republicans’ reconciliation package that would fully restore the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. The amendment will allow taxpayers to fully deduct their state and local taxes on their federal income return, ending double taxation and giving middle-class families in Northern New Jersey a much-needed tax cut.

“In 2017, the Red Moocher States jammed through the Tax Hike Bill that gutted the SALT deduction and hit hardworking middle-class Jersey families with a massive tax increase,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), the Co-Chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus. “Now, the Moocher Red Staters are only offering crumbs to families who are starving for relief from higher prices — a weak attempt to clean up the mess that Donald Trump created. I’ve been fighting since day one to fully restore the SALT deduction and cut taxes for Jersey families, and I’m proud to help lead this amendment with my colleagues to do just that.”

As Co-Chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus, Gottheimer has been fighting to fully restore the SALT deduction for years. Since 2017, Gottheimer has helped pass four bills out of the House to restore SALT and deliver tax relief for Jersey families. Earlier this year, he reintroduced the Securing Access to Lower Taxes by Ensuring (SALT) Deductibility Act, bipartisan legislation to fully restore the SALT deduction.
