RELEASE: Gottheimer Stands in Solidarity Against Racial Injustice — with NJ Attorney General, Local Officials, North Jersey Residents in Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD, NJ – On Wednesday, June 10, 2020, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) stood in solidarity against racial injustice, along with members of the North Jersey community in Ridgewood. 

Gottheimer was joined by New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, Ridgewood Mayor Ramon Hache, Mt. Bethel Baptist Church Reverend Lem Brown, and Ridgewood YMCA President Ernest Lamour. Ex-NFL wide receiver and football commentator Nate Burelson and public speaker and former Ridgewood High School student Garret Henson also spoke.

“Not only is our country coping with the loss of more than 100,000 lives to COVID-19, including more than 2,900 lives lost here in the Fifth District, along with the ongoing public health and economic crisis — but we are continuing to see how Americans are being wrongfully killed because of the color of their skin. This is a fight to end the discrimination, inequality, and deadly racism that has had a grip on our country for far too long,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “I was honored to join so many members of the North Jersey community today — the Attorney General, law enforcement, and local leaders — all coming together to stand up for justice and to fight to make sure our country’s future is far better and brighter than our past.”

On Monday, June 8, 2020, Gottheimer cosponsored the newly announced Justice in Policing Act, to increase accountability, address racial discrimination, and help save lives.

Last week, Gottheimer spoke during a demonstration of unity with the Warren-Sussex County NAACP, Washington Township Police Department, Washington Borough leadership, and North Jersey residents to stand in solidarity for racial justice. 

Gottheimer also hosted a conversation on racial justice live on Facebook with civil rights leader Dr. Mary Frances Berry, the Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights through four Administrations.
